Black Book, 2007 //.
Black Book 2007 is an exploration into the sterility of the gallery atmosphere. It explores guarded scenarios and a general "do not touch" attitude defining the character of art spaces. The book is placed on the gallery floor as thought it has fallen from the pedestal. This is done to get the viewer to interact with the piece through sympathy. When attempting to replace the book it slides off and falls to the ground. This triggers sound playback from within the pedestal, admonishing the viewer to refrain from touching the artwork. Spoken statements are based on a wide variety of scripted responses typically used by gallery or museum guards. The project was programed in MAX/MSP and used a wireless bluetooth accelerometer.
